The need for a strong NATO

April 4, 2009

?

Vivienne Walt has an article on Time.com about the uncertain future of NATO, the Euro-American defense alliance born 60 years ago to prevent Soviet expansionism into Europe. Walt argues that the organization's purpose is cloudy and uncertain. You can read the article @ time.com.

realLibs | OPINION   While it is true that the threat for which NATO was born no longer exists, we believe NATO can continue playing an important role in keeping peace and stopping violations to essential human rights worldwide, as it did in the Balkans during the 1990s. Moreover, the current threat of terrorism can only be stopped with the cooperation of all the current members of NATO.  The fact that Soviet communism is no longer a threat does not mean the world is free from illiberal and fundamentalist ideologies trying to violate the most fundamental individual and human rights. We support NATO and encourage the member states to focus their attention on historical liberal causes: the protection of human rights, the promotion of liberal democracy (by diplomatic means), and the expansion of liberty and justice.
In order to advance this causes -important to all NATO member states-, we need a strong NATO. We need it more than ever.

Marriage equality in Iowa

April 3, 2009
Today, the Iowa Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the ban on same-sex marriage passed a decade ago by the state legislature violates the notion of equal protection under the law and, therefore, is unconstitutional. With this decision, Iowa becomes the third state in the nation (after Massachusetts and Connecticut), but, most importantly, the first mid-western state to legalize same-sex civil marriages. This is a very important victory for gay rights activists in a not necessarily liberal s...

The new darling of conservative populists

March 30, 2009
The New York Times has an article on Glenn Beck, FOX News' new star and hero of the right. It seems FOX always finds a new "idol" to communicate high dosis of right-wing populism.

Democrats defending civil liberties... Or are they?

March 27, 2009
The New Hampshire House has passed a bill that would make gay marriage legal. The bill still has to be approved by the Senate, but, if that happens, it is still not clear whether Democratic Gov. John Lynch will sign it. Lynch has previously stated his opposition to same-sex marriage.
We call on governor Lynch to sign the bill (if passed by the Senate). It would be a good sign that Democrats not only talk the talk, but actually walk the walk on civil rights and liberties.

Bigotry will not save Republicans

March 26, 2009
It seems clear by now that Republicans haven't learned anything from their electoral defeats. Instead of reaching out to new segments of the electorate, party leaders and figures are preaching the same old divisive message to please a narrow-minded right-wing minority of extremists. The last example comes from Vermont, where Republican Governor Jim Douglas has said that he will veto a gay marriage bill, already passed by the state Senate, and currently waiting for a vote in the House. One wou...

UK: Tory leader places debt over tax cuts

March 22, 2009

Our opinion:  We believe that David Cameron's decision to focus on Britain's massive debt is correct. While we usually support tax cuts, a tax-cutting agenda is not what the current British economy needs right now. A balanced budget is essential for a strong economy, not just tax cuts.
